SA2 Examinations and Post Examination Reflection

Hi Everyone,

Phew! The exams are finally over! Have you done your best in your examinations? What do you plan to do now that the examinations are over? In this blog, I would like you to reflect on your examinations and what you plan to do from now until the school re-opens next year. To help you with your reflection, I have listed some questions below:

1. How did you perform in the various SA2 papers?

2. Which paper/s did you find it easier or more difficult?

3. Why do you find these papers difficult or easier?

4. What have you been doing after the examinations?

5. What do you plan to do from now until the school re-opens next year?

6. What would be one or two things you want to do better next year?

7. How do you plan to achieve them?

I am looking forward to read your reflection.

Journal Writing T3 W7 : Graciousness

Hi Everyone,
This week, we will be writing our reflection on graciousness. By being gracious, we can help one another get on the day without showing anger or being impolite. This is more so in a densely populated city like Singapore where it is crowded everywhere. Mrs Nam has introduced the 'Magical Dust of Kindness' project where you are to show your graciousness by using the magical words. I hope you have been practising saying the magical words.

To help you with the reflection, I have listed some questions to guide you. You are not to just answer the questions. Instead, you are to use these questions as a guide and add your own ideas, opinions and thoughts. In this way, your reflection will be more meaningful and interesting.

Here are the questions?
1. What is your meaning of 'graciousness'?
2. Can you give some examples of acts of graciousness?
3. What acts of graciousness have you personally done?
4. Besides the reasons I gave, what other reasons do you think we should be gracious to one another?
5. Do you think Singaporeans are generally gracious? Why do you think so?
6. How can we make Anderson pupils more gracious?
7. Do you like the 'Magical Dust of Kindness' project? Why?
8. How have you benefitted from this project?

I hope to read your reflection soon.

Journal Writing T3 W6 : Cyber Contacts

Hi Everyone,

Mdm Phua Ei Ling, HOD (IT) wrote this:

" Dear Cyber Kids,
Nowadays, we are exposed to the exciting world of the Internet. We are able to search for information or even chat with friends at the click of a mouse. At times, we are required to key in our personal information and we might not even be aware of the dangers of doing it. This is Elean’s encounter with one of her cyber contacts.

“Elean was a 10 years old girl. She loved chatting with friends and getting to know new friends online through various social network platforms. One day, there was a boy named Roy who initiated a chat with Elean. As Elean was bored at home, she decided to add him to her friends’ list and both started chatting with each other. After about 10 minutes, Elean began to share her personal information to Roy. She even sent a photograph of herself to Roy. Soon, Roy requested to meet up with Elean. Even though Elean knew nothing about Roy, she agreed. Just then, her parents came home and found out that Elean was going to meet up with an online friend, one whom she had never seen him before. Her parents stopped her and highlighted the dangers of meeting with a stranger for a young girl like her.”

What about you?

Share with us your story. You may use the following questions to help in your reflection.

1) Have you ever revealed your personal information online?
2) What form of personal information can and cannot be shared online?
3) What are the dangers of sharing personal information?
4) What would you do if your Cyber pal requested for personal information to be shared?
5) What are your experiences on online activities with regard to cyber contacts ?
6) If any of your cyber pals asked you to go out with them, what would you do?
7) How do you protect yourself from people with evil intentions in the cyber space?:

I hope to read your response soon.

Journal Writing T3W5 : Cyberwellness - Inappropriate Content

Hi Everyone,

This is an account given by Mdm Phua Ei Ling, our IT HOD.

'Have you ever feel uncomfortable, weird, scared, confused or guilty about the content you see online? Here’s my story…

Many years ago, when I was surfing the Internet for information on my project, I chanced upon a website with the following caption. - “LOSE WEIGHT FAST- 10 KILOGRAMS in 3 DAYS.” The website provided 10 easy steps for ladies like me to lose weight. Though I found it a little unbelievable, I was tempted to give it a try. Just when I was engrossed in reading and understanding how to go around losing weight in the fastest way, my mother came into my room. She saw the content on the website and asked, “You are not going to follow the steps, aren’t you? How can you go without food for so many days? Is that the right way to lose weight?” I came to realize that I might even cause harm to myself. I have learnt that in order to lose weight, it is important to have a balanced diet and exercise regularly.'

What about you?

- Have you ever seen anything online that made you afraid, uncomfortable or feel excited and yet guilty because you sensed that it was wrong?

- What was the content you saw and how did you know that it was inappropriate?

- What did you do about it?

- Do you know of friends or classmates who have seen inappropriate content on the Internet?

- What advice would you give your friends on the question of inappropriate content on the internet?

I hope to read your responses soon.

Journal Writing T3W4 : Cyber Addiction

Hi Everyone,

Mdm Phua Ei Ling shared her personal experience on Cyber Addiction.

'For the past few weeks, I have been playing a game called “Waka-Waka”on the facebook, an improvised version of Pac-man. I have always enjoyed playing Pac-man since I was young. Soon, I was addicted to the game unknowingly.Negative behaviours such as spending too much time on the game and possessing the urge to play the game soon surfaced. My ultimate goal is to be the first on the score board. However after about a week, I realised that something was amiss. I wasn’t spending enough time with my family members. I began to reflect on the purpose of playing the game and how it has affected my daily routine. I came to understand the importance of having a balanced lifestyle and spending time with my family members. Now, I'll only play the game if I've completed my work and limit myself to at most 30 minutes of gaming every day.'

Well, that's a very interesting story, don't you agree?

What about you? Are you addicted to the computer?

To help you write your reflection, I have listed some questions below:

1. How many hours a day do you spend on the computer?
2. Are you addicted to the computer? If 'yes', how do you become addicted to it? If 'no', how have you managed to remain unaddicted?
3. How has this addiction affect you daily life/routine? (If you're not addicted to the computer, you need not answer this question)
4. Is your school work affected by the time you spend on the computer? Elaborate.
5. What can you do to prevent Cyber Addiction?
6. What advice would you give to your friend who is addicted to computer games?

I hope to read your reflection soon. Start writing immediately.

Rules from Bill Gates

Hi Everyone,

I would like to share the rules of life from Bill Gates who spoke to some high school students recently. Ponder on these rules and you will realise that they are very truthful and sensible.

Here they are:

Rule 1 :Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2 : The world won't care about your self -esteem. The world would expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60 000 right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss.

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping : they called it opportunity.

Rule 6 : If you messed up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents were not as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear any slighest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10 : Television is not real life. In real life, people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

10. Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Hope you like them.
Regards
Mr Ong

Personal Hygiene

Dear Parents and Pupils,

I have noticed that many pupils come to school without handkerchiefs or tissue paper. Whenever they sneeze, they have nothing to cover their nose and mouth. This is a very unhygienic, impolite and socially inconsiderate practice. From tomorrow onwards, I would like everyone to bring along a handkerchief or a small packet of tissue paper. In this way, we will learn not only to be socially responsible but also prevent the spread of disease such as influenza. I will be monitoring whether pupils have a handkerchief or tissue paper starting from tomorrow.

Thank you

T1W3 Journal Writing :Total Defence Day Blogging Competition

Hi Everyone,

The school is holding an intra-level blogging competition in conjunction with Total Defence Day 2009. This year's theme is "What will you defend?"

Details of the competition are found in the above Powerpoint slides. Click on each slide and read the details yourself. Make your blog as beautiful, meaning and creative as possible. You can add photos, videos, etc to your blog.

The dateline for this Total Defence blog entry to me is on Friday, 6 February 2009.

I will be submitting the best blogs to Mr Yazid by Wednesday, 11 February 2009.

For your info (extracted from http://www.whatwilludefend.sg/):In commemorating 25 years of Total Defence, the logo has been given a tweak to stay in tune with a more modern feel while retaining its familiar identity. The tagline "It's Personal. Play your Part." is in a handwritten font that emphasises the personal nature of our involvement in Total Defence, reminding Singaporeans that everyone has a role in protecting the Singaporean way of life. The rounder edges of the logo give it a softer touch, reflecting the personal stake in Total Defence and encouraging Singaporeans to embrace Total Defence in their daily lives.

Hope to read your blog soon.

Materials Given Out on the 1st Day of School

Dear Parents and Pupils,
Today is the first day of school. All the pupils have been given the following:
1. Student Handbook
Although I have gone through the Handbook with the pupils, please go through it yourself. There is a wealth of information about the school. We will be constantly referring to it.

2. Individual Student Details Report
Please update all the particulars in it. This will help us to contact you in event of an emergency and for the purposes of the PSLE examination and posting. I will be collecting this form on Monday, 5 Jan 09.

3. Class Time-Table
This contains information about the various subjects and the teacher teaching your child. It is also useful to refer to the time-table if you want to speak to me over the phone. I will be free when I am not teaching the period/s stated.

4. Annual School-Based Heath Screening in Primay School
This leaflet provides information on the health screening exercise. Please hand your child's Health Booklet for my safe keeping on Monday, 5 Jan 08 so that the record will be available when the team arrives.

5. Introduction Letter
I have taught most of the pupils last year. Nevertheless, the introduction letter serves as a reminder to my contact details and other pertinent information regarding written assignment.

I hope parents and pupils will refer to this blog as I will be posting information such as homework, reminders and other important school events. This will save you unnecessary calls and frustration if parents are unable to reach the teacher. By checking the class blog, you will also know what is happening in the class and school.

Regards
Mr Ong
